Design ~ Transform ~ Maintain

Case Study Kingston Way

  • Location: Kingston Way, Southwick
  • Aspect: South
  • Brief: A low maintenance garden with drought tollerant planting, for primary use during the summer months.
The Process
  • Initial Consoltation: A meeting with the owners was scheduled and a design questionaire completed. Any ideas the customers had were discussed. These included any limitations, expectations and use of the garden. A budget was given.

  • Design: The customers requirements were a seating area and a rockery. Free reign was given for the remaining design features. I decided to make the most of the south facing garden and sheltered location by using sun loving architechtural plants.
  • Preparation: During the excavation of the first layer of slabs, it was discovered that there were in fact another two layers of conrete paving underneath. In addition the soil was heavy clay. Five skips later we started the foundations!

  • Transformation: With the use of a mini digger, we dug out the area for the sunken patio and removed the old rotten fencing. We brought in six tonnes of organic compost and dug over all areas that were to be planted. Natural indian paving was sourced for the patio area. We errected new close board fencing and painted it green. Suitable plants were researched and sourced while the patio was being laid. Once the plants had been positioned and planted, a membrane and gravel were laid over the surface with stepping stones positioned around the garden.

  • Outcome: A stunning low maintenance garden with plants that will endure the English weather all year round. A showcase for Mike's unique garden furniture!
